The gay marriage initiatives in 2004 on the ballot in 11 states had no discernable effect on turnout among conservatives. Yes, that’s right, none. Not even in Ohio, which was a swing state in 2004, won in a close contest by former President Bush.

Today Office 2010 Key, the myth is repeated over and over that Bush beat Kerry in Ohio in part because of the gay marriage initiative on the ballot. The facts and data simply do not support that conclusion. Yes, conservative turnout was up in Ohio by five percentage points. It was also up five percentage points nationally. And if you look at the conservative turnout increase in the 11 states verses the other 39 states that didn’t have gay marriage on the ballot, the conservative turnout was up exactly the same.

Further, if you look at white evangelical and conservative turnout in swing states with gay marriage initiatives versus swing states without them (such as Florida Server 2003 Key, Pennsylvania and Nevada), again, there is no statistical difference in turnout increases among these groups. Yes, that is right, increase in turnout among key conservative groups did not vary between swing states with and without these initiatives on the ballot.

In 2004, I worked on President Bush’s campaign as chief strategist and was deeply involved in examining and determining which issues would motivate conservatives and evangelicals. In all that analysis preparing for the campaign Windows 7 Key, not a single social issue rose to the top five motivators (not abortion, not gay marriage, not a one). The motivators for that election were national security issues, issues concerning the budget and taxes, and issues surrounding the economy. And these are the issues the campaign put all their resources behind and I constantly advocated internally as our focus.

So again, let’s put this myth to rest. Gay marriage initiatives in 2004 did not affect the turnout among conservative voters in any way. It’s important as analysts for us to look at the data as it stands and try not to repeat myths just because either side promulgates them over and over to serve their purposes.

CoreLogic’s home price index gained 0.6 percent from February, but was still down 0.6 percent compared with March a year ago.

Excluding sales of distressed properties, prices climbed 0.9 percent on a yearly basis. Homeowners in danger of foreclosure, or in “distress”, often sell their homes at significantly reduced prices.

“This spring, the housing market is responding to an improving balance between real estate supply and demand, which is causing stabilization in house prices”, Mark Fleming, chief economist at CoreLogic, said in a statement.

Of the top 100 statistical areas measured by population, 57 showed year-over-year declines, down from 65.

The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and Syria have been negotiating for weeks on a plan for the distribution of aid throughout the country, but U.N. envoys familiar with the talks said the government and the U.N. agency are deadlocked on the issue of who will be in charge.

“The Syrians want to maintain control of the distribution networks,” a diplomat told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

“That position is a non-starter for OCHA, as it should be,” he said. “OCHA can’t allow the Syrian government to use it as a way to get people (they want to arrest) or to deliver aid only to government supporters.”

Valerie Amos, head of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said it was in the middle of discussions with Syria on how to get aid to those who needed it.

Asked during a trip to Canada whether the talks had hit deadlock, she told Reuters: “We’re continuing to discuss and negotiate so that’s not the terminology I would use Tattoo Ink And Supplies, no.”

Amos said she did not know when the outstanding issues would be resolved.

“I certainly would not expect it to be months. I mean Tattoo Carbon Paper, these are people that we identified toward the end of March as needing help, so we need to get help to them as quickly as possible,” she said in a phone interview.

The U.N. aid office has sent a letter to the Syrian government emphasizing the importance of the United Nations being at least partly in charge of the aid operation, diplomats said.

A U.N.-backed peace plan between Syria’s government and rebels determined to oust President Bashar al-Assad calls on the government and opposition to “ensure timely provision of humanitarian assistance to all areas affected by the fighting.”

That plan, which was brokered by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, has failed to bring an end to the fighting despite promises from Damascus and opposition groups that they would respect a ceasefire announced on April 12.

A U.N. official said Amos was keen to avoid linking the aid issue to political disputes on other aspects of the Annan plan. “She wants to keep aid separate from politics.”

MAINTAINING NEUTRALITY

U.N. aid groups remain active in Syria, but they lack the kind of unfettered access throughout the country that they need to carry out their work effectively, diplomats said. The envoys all declined to be identified due to the confidential and sensitive nature of the talks between the U.N. aid office and Damascus.

Syria is insisting that the Syrian Arab Red Crescent be in charge of aid distribution, but the U.N. office is against that. Having the Syrian organization in charge would jeopardize U.N. neutrality, diplomats said, adding that it was not up to the task of coordinating aid distribution to more than a million people.

Asked whether the Syrians were trying to manage the delivery of all the aid, Amos replied: “In any aid operation there are some principles that are very important to adhere to. So yes, we will use operating partners on the ground … but it’s also important that you are able to monitor what is happening so you have to be present in the field to plan and monitor distribution. Aid has got to be delivered based on vulnerability and without discrimination.”

U.N. officials and diplomats say the U.N. aid office would be willing to compromise by managing aid distribution jointly with the Syrian Red Crescent, but it is determined to maintain a measure of control over the delivery of aid throughout Syria.

The officials and diplomats, speaking before the interview with Amos, said aid distribution could be hijacked by those in the Syrian government who would like to use it as a means of getting access to opposition strongholds currently off-limits to government forces or for punishing rebel-held areas by denying them access to humanitarian aid.

There had been other sticking points in the talks between the U.N. aid office and Syria, but those have largely been resolved. The Syrian government had been concerned about U.N. demands that the human rights of aid recipients would be guaranteed, that they should have freedom of movement and would not be arbitrarily arrested.

Despite compromises on those and other issues Cheap Tattoo Machines, Damascus has refused to budge on the question of who will be in charge of distributing aid, diplomats said.

“We hope to reach an agreement on this question, too, soon,” an envoy said.

Tokyo – Analysts who have studied photos of a half-dozen ominous new North Korean missiles showcased recently at a lavish military parade say they were fakes, and not very convincing ones, casting further doubt on the country’s claims of military prowess.

Since its recent rocket launch failure, Pyongyang’s top military leaders have made several boastful statements about its weapons capabilities. On Wednesday, Vice Marshal Ri Yong Ho claimed his country is capable of defeating the United States “at a single blow.” And on Monday, North Korea promised “special actions” that would reduce Seoul’s government to ashes within minutes.

But the weapons displayed April 15 appear to be a mishmash of liquid-fuel and solid-fuel components that could never fly together. Undulating casings on the missiles suggest the metal is too thin to withstand flight. Each missile was slightly different from the others, even though all were supposedly the same make. They don’t even fit the launchers they were carried on.

“There is no doubt that these missiles were mock-ups,” Markus Schiller and Robert Schmucker, of Germany’s Schmucker Technologie, wrote in a paper posted recently on the website Armscontrolwonk.com that listed those discrepancies. “It remains unknown if they were designed this way to confuse foreign analysts, or if the designers simply did some sloppy work.”

The missiles, called KN-08s, were loaded onto the largest mobile launch vehicles North Korea has ever unveiled. Pyongyang gave them special prominence by presenting them at the end of the parade, which capped weeks of celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the country’s founding father, Kim Il Sung.

The unveiling created an international stir. The missiles appeared to be new, and designed for long-range attacks.

That’s a big concern because, along with developing nuclear weapons, North Korea has long been suspected of trying to field an intercontinental ballistic missile, or ICBM, capable of reaching the United States. Washington contends that North Korea’s failed April 13 rocket launch was an attempt to test missile technology rather than the scientific mission Pyongyang claims.

But after pouring over close-up photos of the missiles, Schiller and Schmucker Discount Marc Jacobs Dresses, whose company has advised NATO on missile issues, argue the mock-ups indicate North Korea is a long way from having a credible ICBM.

“There is still no evidence that North Korea actually has a functional ICBM,” they concluded, adding that the display was a “dog and pony show” and suggesting North Korea may not be making serious progress toward its nuclear-tipped ICBM dreams.

North Korea has a particularly bad track record with ICBM-style rockets. Its four launches since 1998 – three of which it claimed carried satellites – have all ended in failure.

Though North Korea frequently overstates its military capabilities, the missiles displayed this month might foreshadow weapons it is still working on.

David Wright Herve Leger sale, a physicist with the Union of Concerned Scientists who has written extensively about North Korea’s missile program, said he believes the KN-08s could be “somewhat clumsy representations of a missile that is being developed.”

Wright noted that the first signs the outside world got of North Korea’s long-range Taepodong-2 missile – upon which the recent failed rocket was based – was from mock-ups seen in 1994, 12 years before it was actually tested on the launch pad.

“To understand whether there is a real missile development program in place, we are trying to understand whether the mock-ups make sense as the design for a real missile,” he said. “It is not clear that it has a long enough range to make sense for North Korea to invest a lot of effort in.”

Theodore Postol, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and former scientific adviser to the U.S. Chief of Naval Operations, said the Taepodong-2 design remains the more real future threat – though even that remains at least a decade away – and the KN-08 is simply a smoke screen.

“I believe that these missiles are not only mock-ups, but they are very unlikely to be actual mock-ups of any missiles in design,” he said. “Fabricating a missile like the KN-08 would require a gigantic indigenous technical effort. … The only way North Korea could develop such a missile with its pitiful economy would be if someone gave it to them.”

He noted that a comparable U.S. missile, the Minuteman III, required “decades of expertise in rocket motors, and vast sums of intellectual, technological and financial capital.”

Much attention, meanwhile, has been given to the 16-wheel mobile launchers that carried the missiles during the parade, which experts believe may have included a chassis built in China. That raises questions of whether China has violated U.N. sanctions against selling missile-related technology to Pyongyang.

Some missile experts say the launchers were designed to carry a larger missile than the 18-meter-long KN-08, and argue that North Korea would not have spent millions of dollars on them unless it has, or intends to have, a big missile to put on them.

But Wright said the launchers, like the missiles they carried, could also have been more for show than anything else.

“Given the international attention it has gotten from parading these missiles you could argue that the cost of buying the large trucks – which add a lot of credibility to the images of the missiles – was money well spent in terms of projecting an image of power,” he said.

It’s also likely to have an impact on a future case about whether FDA approval of a drug pre-empts lawsuits from people who were personally harmed by the drug. Key Democratic lawmakers vowed to quickly pass legislation to deal with the issue. USAT says that this decision, along with another unanimous ruling that stated Maine can’t impose special requirements for tobacco deliveries, marks “a setback for state efforts to protect citizens in health-related areas.”

In an analysis piece inside, the NYT notes that these efforts by the government come at an interesting time, when many have raised questions about whether the FDA is actually effective in making sure that dangerous products don’t reach consumers. It’s also one more example of how the Bush administration has been angering states’ rights advocates, who are usually closely aligned with the Republican Party.

Meanwhile, the WP and LAT front another Supreme Court decision, which gave workers the right to sue employers over mismanagement of their 401(k) retirement plans. More than 50 million workers, who have somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 trillion invested in these types of accounts, could be affected by the decision. The LAT emphasizes this decision could lead to a variety of lawsuits by workers, and some warned that it might motivate small businesses to drop their plans in order to avoid problems.

Criticizing Obama for his lack of experience and for being a candidate who talks a good game but can’t deliver the goods is hardly a new strategy for Clinton. The Post says Clinton’s huge defeat in Wisconsin this week after intensely criticizing Obama showed voters weren’t really swayed by her arguments, but she’s betting that a more intense effort will give her better results in Texas and Ohio. A key test will play out tonight when the contenders will debate in Texas, an event that everyone says will be critically important for Clinton.

And while she has gotten a bit tougher, some of Clinton’s advisers are arguing she should get even more aggressive. The NYT and LAT front looks at the continuing deep divisions among Clinton’s advisers about how to go forward. Some, including Mark Penn, her chief strategist Buy Christian Audigier Clothing, are arguing that she has no choice but to carry out what the NYT characterizes as a “scorched-earth approach.” Others are arguing that she should show a warmer side. These divisions are hardly new and were present even before the Iowa contest, notes the LAT. Penn won the early argument that she should run based on her experience and as a strong candidate who would be ready for the presidency “from Day One,” a view many disagreed with inside the campaign. The LAT article makes it clear that Penn will get much of the blame if the former first lady loses the battle. Penn is not good at “recognizing the human aspects of a candidate or a campaign–the soul of it,” a “person knowledgeable about the campaign” said.

And now for the story everyone will be talking about today. The NYT fronts a piece that claims that during the 2000 presidential race, several of Sen. John McCain’s advisers became so concerned his relationship with a younger lobbyist “had become romantic” that they warned him it could destroy his career. A former top strategist for McCain says (on the record) he even met with the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman Cheap Chloe Dresses, to privately urge her to stay away from his boss. The Times says two “former associates” said McCain “acknowledged behaving inappropriately and pledged to keep his distance.” The story itself is rather odd because it begins with the explosive revelation that McCain might have had an affair, but it then tries to blend it in with a look back at the Keating Five scandal and other instances where McCain stepped away from his persona as a lawmaker who fights against special interests, which could have been interesting by itself as a mere memory-jogger. The NYT then waits until near the end of the story to go back to the relationship with the lobbyist. Overall, the paperpresents surprisingly little evidence that there actually was inappropriate behavior beyond the concerns of some staffers, which makes one wonder what was left out of a piece that was undoubtedly heavily vetted by lawyers. Of course Discount Herve Leger gown, McCain and Iseman both deny there was any kind of romantic involvement, and yesterday his campaign issued a statement calling the story “a hit-and-run smear campaign.”

More of this will surely be coming out in the next few days Buy DKNY Clothes, but a key question remains: Why did the NYT decide to publish this today when Drudge had warned the story was coming back in December? The New Republic revealed yesterday that its media reporter has been working on a piece about the infighting at the NYT regarding the story, and McCain’s camp says it was the reason why the story was published now.

The WP fronts a brief follow-up to the Times story but doesn’t mention a romantic involvement, preferring to say that the senator’s aides were concerned about his “continued ties to a lobbyist” who had business before the committee he chaired. The concerns grew so deep that at one point Iseman was banned from McCain’s office. Three telecom lobbyists told the WP that Iseman frequently bragged about her connections to McCain.

Police have charged the girl with attempted murder and say the attack is not random and the two are known to each other.
